Newport City were forced to settle for point again as Caerau Ely came from behind to earn a draw, leaving the Steelmen further adrift in the race for promotion.
Caerau started brightly and immediately put City under pressure. Daniel Griffiths went close inside the first few minutes, seeing his close-range effort deflect just over the bar.
Despite Caerau’s strong start, it was the Steelmen who struck first. Against the run of play, Kayne McLaggon tapped home from inside the six-yard box on 11 minutes after excellent work down the left from Rhys Kavanagh.
Caerau almost hit straight back when George Sheppard’s low effort was deflected inches wide of the far post.
City then enjoyed a strong spell and twice went close to doubling their advantage. Harvey Sing saw a lofted ball loop onto the crossbar, before Owen Bancroft’ cross from the left shaved the bar and drifted wide.
The Steelmen finished the half in the ascendancy and once again should have made it 2–0. However, Ellis Sage couldn’t make clean contact with a low cross inside the six-yard box when well placed.
HT 1-0
Caerau restarted on the front foot and threatened immediately, with Griffiths forcing Edward King into a save from the edge of the area. The visitors’ pressure finally told on the hour mark, as Griffiths tapped in from close range following a low delivery across the box from Hywel Davies.
With momentum now firmly with Caerau, Griffiths came close again. His header from a corner was blocked at the near post before deflecting narrowly wide. Tim Parker was then denied by King from close range.
City nearly snatched a goal against the run of play when Sage’s low deflected strike was clawed off the goal line by keeper Harry Irving. However, Caerau continued to create the clearer openings. Parker dragged a low effort wide of the right post after breaking into the area, before Griffiths headed wide at the far post from another corner.
The Steelmen applied late pressure in the closing minutes, causing chaos inside the Caerau box. However, they but couldn’t find a decisive touch as the game ended level.
The result saw City lose further ground in the promotion race, as they now sit ten points behind 3rd placed Ammanford AFC.
